What fun is a videogame without controllers?
You're in control
To be able enjoy the joy of controllers, you need to solder a lot of small components. Sorry about that. About half of them are there for trackball/driving controllers, but why be Scrooge McDuck here. Let's get started. Most of the components (unsurprisingly) come in pairs, because there are two controller ports:
U23 74LS00D (SO14)
U34 74LS05D (SO14)
R1, R2 270 (Note: this one is size 1206!)
R14,R15 1k5
R16,R17 120
R19,R20 1k8
R22, R23 10k
R24, R25 22k
R26, R27 100k
R28 1k5
R29, R76 3k3
C9, C10, C19, C20 10n
C13, C14 100n
C15, C16 47n
C17, C18 100p
T1, T2 BC847
D21 BAV70
Next you will install the sockets for the two controller buffers, please note the orientation, the two ICs are oriented in opposite directions!
Then install
U15, U16 74LS541N (DIL20)
RN1 and RN2 7x22k SIL resistor array
J5, J6 L717SDE09P1ACH 9 pin Sub-D (Amphenol)
Set Jumper SJ14 (this is important!)
Let the games begin...
Now you can insert a cartridge again, and using a ColecoVision joystick connected to Controller1 port, you should get past this screen by pressing e.g. "1":
Remember, there is no sound hardware installed yet, but you can start playing a round or two in anticipation, you've earned it!
