Now we'll finally add sound to our games!
Beep, Blip, Bloop!
We're almost there! Just a few more parts, and you'll hear the music and other noises to your favourite games. But first you must come up with a sound generator IC, which is not all that readily available anymore, but you can get it on eBay for instance (beware of fakes!). To make your life easier, the board supports two different versions of the TI sound chip:
U10 SN76489A or SN76494A (DIL16)
But before soldering on the DIL socket, solder these SMT parts, which is easier with the socket still out of the way:
R21 1k
C12 100nF
C31, C90 1u/16V 5mm electrolytic capacitor
Set SJ15 and SJ16.
Set SJ19 if you're using the 76494A chip, since this is the audio input, and if you don't ground it, it might make noises. For the 76489A, leave it open.
Begun the clone wars have...
Ready for the final test of the basic clone!
Throw in a game, and play! It should sound fine. This is what the board should look like now in all its glory:
Epilogue...
All following steps are optional and add stuff you don't absolutely need or was never part of the original ColecoVision console:
Pause key
ADAM related stuff like more RAM, more ROM and memory management
Better sound by adding the MSX sound chip
USB for connectivity to a PC e.g. for downloading games
So if you care for any of those, keep reading this blog...
